Your introduction to lamination printing
Lamination is one of those finishing touches you’ve probably seen listed across a wide range of print products, from Book Covers, Greetings Cards and Postcards to Booklets and Business Cards. But what exactly is it, and why might it be worth that little bit extra?
Let’s break it down.
What Is Lamination?
First things first—this isn’t the thick, glossy plastic coating you might remember from school ID cards or classroom posters. Professional lamination is a far more refined process. It involves applying a super-thin plastic film to the surface of your printed material, bonding it seamlessly to the paper for a smooth, durable finish.
The result? A product that not only looks and feels premium, but is also protected from scratches, scuffs, and general wear and tear.
Laminating Covers
Hardback book covers have a significant 'wrap around' the case when they are made. The manufacturubg process involves the paper being formed around the hard edges of the case after printing, which can cause some cracking and damage so it best to specify a laminate.
Similarly for other bound books, a heavy ink coverage around the spine area can be compromised in the finising process by not laminating first.
Some designs require uncoated material like G . F Smith Colorplan, but be aware of the potential challenges and design and set expectations appropriately.
Types of Lamination
We offer four distinct lamination finishes, each with its own unique look and feel:
- Matt - A soft, low-sheen finish that gives your print a subtle, sophisticated look
- Antscuff - Similar to matt, but is more resitant to finger prints and scuff marks. Very useful when covering an image with dark and/or heavy ink coverage
- Gloss - A shiny, high-contrast finish that enhances colours and imagery
Matt vs Gloss
- Matt is perfect for a clean, modern aesthetic with minimal reflection.
- Gloss is your go-to for vibrant colours and a polished, high-shine finish.
Single or Double-Sided?
You can choose to laminate one side or both, depending on how the product will be used. For example:
- Greetings Cards: Laminate the outside for protection and presentation, but leave the inside uncoated so it’s easy to write on.
- Business Cards: Double-sided lamination keeps both sides looking pristine, especially if they’ll be handled frequently.
Why Choose Lamination?
Here’s why lamination is more than just a pretty finish:
- Durability: Protects against scratches, fingerprints, and general handling.
- Covers: Prevent cracking around the spine and wrap around areas.
- Longevity: Keeps your prints looking fresh and professional for longer.
- Transport Protection: Helps prevent ink transfer during shipping—especially useful for bulk orders.
- Customer Appeal: A sleek, tactile finish can make your product more engaging and memorable.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re printing business cards, leaflets, or luxury invitations, lamination adds that extra layer of polish and protection. It’s a small upgrade that can make a big difference in how your brand is perceived.
So next time you place an order, why not give lamination a go? Your prints and your customers will thank you.
