Booklet Binding Types

There are generally 3 types of booklet binding – Staple Bound, Perfect Bound and Wiro Bound. Although they are often referred to by similar names. We also offer hardcover (case bound) books and layflat books, which use similar binding methods.

Staple Bound
Also known in the trade as Saddle Stitched. Pages are bound by 2 staples through the middle of the booklet. This is the most affordable form of booklet binding and commonly used for magazines, zines, brochures and comic books.

Perfect Bound

Also known in the trade as PUR, which is an abbreviation of PolyUrethane Reactive adhesives. Perfect Bound booklets have their pages glued into a flat spine. Perfect bound booklets typically include paperback books, high end magazines, graphic novels, catalogues and prospectus.

Wiro Bound

Also known as Wire Bound, because pages are held together by a loop of wire that winds through holes punched in the papers. Wiro bound booklets are typically diaries, notepads, manuala and activity books.

Case Bound

Hardback books get their name from having a case bound cover. The interior pages are typically bound together using a PUR perfect binding method, then the hard cover is attached to the outside. This process is known in the industry as a case bound book.

Layflat

Layflat books get their name from their special spine that allows the pages of the book, when opened to lay flat. This feature is typically used in photo albums with double page spread images. A layflat book may have a paper cover or be case bound with an additional hard cover.

How to upload your files

We’ll accept your booklet files however you’d like to upload them. Send single pages or spreads as individual files or put all your pages in a combined file. We can work with either.

The maximum file upload is 2GB. Please contact our team if your file size is larger and we'll help you get your file into the workflow.

Cover

As you’re uploading your files for your booklet pages, keep in mind that the cover actually consists of four pages. There’s the front cover, inside front cover, back cover, and inside back cover.

Bleed

For all booklets, we ask for a 3mm bleed on each page. Please refrain from adding important content to this area.

Binding

We have three binding options available for booklets, including saddle stitched or stapled, perfect bound, and wiro bound. Please keep in mind that binding options may depend on the number of pages in your booklet. With too few pages, you may be limited to saddle stitched, whereas too many pages might require perfect bound. When you add all your pages to your order, our automatic system will suggest the best binding option for your booklet.

Spine for Perfect Bound

If you choose perfect bound for your booklet, the spine will contain a design. You must upload a separate file for the spine; once the booklet is in your cart our system will calculate the depth of your spine. If you do not upload a separate file for the spine of your booklet, we must leave it blank.

Completing your order

You must ensure all placeholders are completed before you can submit your order. If your booklet contains 20 pages, for example, then all 20 boxes must be filled. You can only add pages in multiples of 4, so if you do not have enough content then you must add blank pages.
